Exciting News in College Swimming: NAG Relay Record Holder Ben Jaggers Commits to Arizona State University!
Swimming at the collegiate level is more than just a goal for many aspiring athletes; it often represents a lifelong ambition built on hard work, perseverance, and immense dedication. There’s a community that rallies around these young swimmers, cheering them on every step of the way. Fitter and Faster Swim Camps (https://fitterandfaster.com/), proud sponsors of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news, take great pride in celebrating the achievements of these athletes, alongside the families and mentors who guide them.
Recently, Arizona State University has secured a noteworthy commitment from standout backstroker Ben Jaggers (https://swimswam.com/tag/ben-jaggers/) for the 2027-2028 academic year. Hailing from Texas and currently competing for Waterloo Swimming while attending Anderson High School in Austin, Jaggers has made his intention clear. He shared his excitement through SwimSwam, stating:
"I’m incredibly thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to pursue both my academic and athletic careers at Arizona State University! My gratitude extends to my family, coaches, and friends who have consistently supported and motivated me during this journey. A special shoutout to Coach Will for his unwavering belief in my potential and for continually encouraging me to reach my best self. Furthermore, I want to express my appreciation to Coach Herbie and the entire ASU staff for providing me with this wonderful opportunity. Forks up!"
Jaggers’ swimming journey has already been marked by impressive achievements. A highlight was at the 2025 Speedo Sectionals in Justin, where he excelled in the 100 backstroke, claiming the title of champion with a remarkable time of 47.96 seconds—making him the only swimmer in the event to finish under 48.5 seconds. He also secured a noteworthy 4th place in the 200 backstroke, posting another lifetime best of 1:47.79.
Looking ahead, this summer, he took on an additional accolade by becoming a national age group record holder (https://swimswam.com/waterloo-swimming-cracks-national-15-16-age-group-record-in-boys-200-medley-relay/) after leading off for Waterloo’s 15-16 age group in the long course 200 medley relay. His split for the 50 back was an impressive 26.16 seconds, which helped the team achieve a historic final time of 1:44.53—setting a new record for this age group.
Here are Jaggers’ Best SCY Times:
- 100 back – 47.96 seconds
- 200 back – 1:47.79 seconds
- 50 back – 22.35 seconds
- 100 free – 46.48 seconds
- 50 free – 21.13 seconds
When Jaggers arrives in Tempe, he'll find himself among elite training peers. The Sun Devils boast a rich history in backstroke, highlighted by Olympic gold medalist Hubi Kos (https://swimswam.com/tag/hubi-kos/), who still holds the team records for both the 100 and 200 back. While Kos has moved on to Texas, another formidable presence has joined the team: Adam Chaney (https://swimswam.com/bio/adam-chaney/), a U.S. Open Record holder. In just his first fall season, Chaney made a significant mark by becoming ASU’s 4th fastest 100 backstroker with a time of 44.49 seconds.
At the conference level, the Sun Devils recently celebrated a solid victory at the Big 12 Championship. Currently, Jaggers’ times in both the 100 and 200 backstroke position him well for B and C finals, respectively. However, to elevate his performance to NCAA level and potentially anchor the Sun Devils' medley relay, he’s going to need to fine-tune his techniques and shave off some time in the next two years before stepping onto campus. Given his upward trajectory, further improvements are highly anticipated.
Jaggers will be joining an impressive incoming class at ASU for 2031, alongside butterfly specialists Gavin Halusic (https://swimswam.com/tag/gavin-halusic/) and Aidan Collins, sprint breaststroker Thor Johannessen, and freestyler Harrison Tater.
